Sourcefire Vulnerability Research Team to Receive Advance Access to Microsoft
Vulnerability Data
Columbia, MD – October 14, 2008 – Open source innovator and SNORT® creator,
Sourcefire, Inc. (Nasdaq: FIRE), a leader in Enterprise Threat Management, today
announced that it will receive vulnerability information from Microsoft in advance of
monthly security bulletins through its participation in the Microsoft Active Protections
Program (MAPP). MAPP, a new program from the Microsoft Security Response Center
(MSRC), provides vulnerability information to security software providers in advance of
Microsoft’s monthly security update release.
As a partner in MAPP, the early notification will help the Sourcefire Vulnerability
Research Team (VRT) better anticipate emerging threats and continue its track record of
delivering timely protection against new and dynamic attacks.
“Security is an industry-wide challenge, and through our participation in the Microsoft
Active Protections Program, Sourcefire is demonstrating its commitment to ensuring the
continued safety and integrity of our customers’ networks,” said Matt Watchinski, Senior
Director of the Sourcefire Vulnerability Research Team. “By writing rules designed to
detect all attempts to exploit a vulnerability, instead of just the exploits themselves, the
VRT takes a comprehensive approach to protecting its users’ assets. The MAPP program
is evidence that Microsoft shares our commitment to delivering comprehensive security
solutions”
The Sourcefire VRT is a group of leading edge intrusion detection and prevention experts
working to discover, assess and respond to the latest trends in hacking activity, intrusion
attempts and vulnerabilities. In addition to MAPP, the VRT is supported by the vast
resources of the open source Snort community; including public and private data feeds,
independent security researchers and honeynets. This collaborative network makes the
VRT one of the largest groups dedicated to advances in the network security industry.
Because the VRT will now be receiving vulnerability information earlier, Sourcefire
customers can benefit from improvements to Sourcefire’s industry leading rule
development and update process. These enhancements may include:
• Faster rule development
• Improved detection rates
• Fewer false positives
“Our partners share our passion for industry collaboration to protect a world full of
Internet users,” said Mark Miller, Director of Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing
product management. “No one company can accomplish this by itself. That is why we are
partnering with Sourcefire to advance and improve security.”
